Otter Creek trail - Map, GPX, KML

Postby Rock_Rat on Sun May 25, 2008 11:49 pm

I spent Friday and Saturday on Otter Creek trail in Otter Creek wilderness just outside of Elkins. I decided this would make an excellent test for our new Trax section. Otter Creek trail is a fairly level walk and the section we did from Hendrick trail to Mores run could be easily be done as a day hike. There are several stream crossings only two of which are require any real wading. The last of the these three was the most difficult with swift water above knee deep. There are plenty of camp sites in this area and most are fairly secluded from one another. Pictures from our trip and a write up can be found on my site http://www.sahdowx.com. I used http://www.gpsvisualizer.com to create the map image.

Otter Creek is one my favorite places in the State. You need to try it from the other end, it's much more scenic. Cool website too, I've been playing with some of my saved tracks.

We had actually intended to do a loop around shavers mt. and then back down Otter Creek but changed our minds at the last minute. I'll have to try it from the other end some time.

You can go 4 miles or so from the other end without a water crossing. The water is usually low enough to rock hop Coal Run. You can go farther if you want to tackle Green Mountain. It's a killer though.
